I have a GMC Yukon XL that I recently bought and the previous owner has too much fluid in the transmission. Therefore, I'm going to drop the pan and replace the fluid as needed as well as the filter. What fluid did the factory use for my truck? Dextron IV?

Thanks!

How did you check the fluid level? Was the truck running?

Yes I did exactly what someone on here said to do. I drove the truck for 15-20 minutes to reach operating temps and then went to the driveway and put it in first and slowly drove up for 3-4 seconds, then in reverse, and repeated 2-3 times. Is that the proper way? The transmission doesn't slip, and doesn't slam into gear if i REALLY ease on it but the second that I accelerate even moderately quickly, the tramsmission slams into 3rd gear. So I'm thinking its the oil levels being too high. Any other thoughts?

Your ok the way your checked the fluid level. I don't know much about transmissions other than its not good to have too much fluid in them. The extra fluid may be causing it to foam and give you weird shifting behavior.
