A 241 with an auto 4wd is not possible. Tranny may still work. It really depends on the bell housing to be identical I think. There were one and two piece units used. Perhaps you should inspect the unit in person to clarify some things. And maybe grab his VIN while you are at it.

its about an hour and a half away. he said it came out of a 98 Tahoe. do you know if the 241 was an option in a 98? or what the number should be? he has the 5.7 with it and i was interested in buying it all but i am not sure its the year he is saying it is.

Technically the 241 is a floor shifter t-case, the 243 a dash mounted pusbutton e-shifter and the 246 also an e-shifter but with an Auto4wd and nuetral option although you do not see the word nuetral on the buttons. It is possible thru specific circumstances that a floor shifter could have been installed in a '98 but not likey for the regular consumer. In the '98 you would have already jump to generations in 4wd technology. See if he is willing to give up the VIN code over the phone and pass it on here so I can verify some things.

what i am reading is the 241 is manual shift so something isn't right. I sent the person a message asking him for VIN and to confirm number on transfer case. if he replies i will ask him to confirm it was a 98.

i really do appreciate all your help and knowledge.

http://mmerlinn.com/catalog/zoemackellin/xn_241/xn241080.htm

i have been searching everything i can to help and on the page linked above it does list the number 15733768 that he gave me as a 98 and 241C so that validates to me that its a 98.

he told me 241C, 15733768, 317982 and 272 Ratio was on the transfer case.

i think i will buy what he has ( what should i do to used trans? i know fluid and filter but is there front and back seals i can put in new ones while its out? ) and just check my transfer case for issues.

Alright I think you are going a different direction then What I thought you were. But at any rate how do you propose you are going to put a 241 in place of a 243? For complications sake I am hope I am wrong but I don't see what your doing is going to work.

I am hoping my issue is transmission and i will just overhaul 243 my transfer case. I will sell the other one for whatever i can get for it. i don't plan on using the 241. just the transmission swap. sorry for any confusion.

What happens when a torque converter goes bad? I started it. Got under it and it sounds fine then I hear a click then it starts making noise bad and the loudest point was under converter. If I cut it off its quiet when I first start it then the click then the bad noise. Any ideas?

If it is like a tapping noise it is usually loose converter to flex plate bolts or flex plate to crankshaft flange bolts. If it sound continous could be the internal structure or clutch mechanism acting up. Or the tranny pump may be failing. That would screw up you driving for sure. Can you get video or audio of it. There is a panel at the bottom you can remove to look inside a bit. If needed have a tranny shop check your line pressure.
