I am having my 2007 Yukon XL Denali transmission worked on and am wanting to see about toughening it up and buying a stronger tranny for towing. Is this a waste of time? and does anyone have any suggestions of a new stronger more durable transmission?

Did the 2007s come with the 6-Speed 6L80 or a 4-speed transmission? If you've got the 6-Speed, you can certainly beef it up. The 6L90 and Allison transmissions were used in the 2500s, the latter behind the diesels but not sure how either would work with your transfer case and mounts as the 6L90 at least is a bit longer.

The 4-speeds in factory form have a higher torque and tow rating than the 6-speeds and if you do have a 4-speed that too can be beefed up with stronger internals. Heat is a transmissions worst enemy, keep it cool.

I believe 2007 would be a 4L60e. A step up would be 4L80e, but it's bigger and not a straight in and out swap. As swathdiver said, there are better 6 speed transmissions that might be even better. These are all factory GM units, so the parts are out there, but if you're just looking to rebuild or replace your trans, the 4L60e is decent and can be built to take a little more abuse, just keep it cool, especially when towing.

I've got the same situation going on, a 1996 Tahoe 4x4 close to 200k miles but the engine still a beast well taken care of however the tranny not so good.

Im trying to determine if its an electrical/sensor issue or if I indeed need an overhaul. These local shopa around here cant trust them. No lights/ codes on the Dash, i changed the fluid & filter but didn't help. pan debris was normal. Wat reliable tests exist that I can perform to confirm a shot tranny? I really want to get it up and running. And if i do gotta rebuild is there a specific kit that stands out. Eventually i wanna lift it & do some engine work now that I got a really good paying job. Time to have fun and build my toys

Thanks. Lots of Activity in this Forum btw unlike the Table Forum

If we wanted to find a used tranny for as close to a direct replacement as possibnle for 6 speed, what are our options? A pick up's tranny?
