I don't think I've filled up the burb from empty to full for less than $100 for at least 6 months and you're right it does matter when you're budgeting for a road trip.

UPDATE: we are still on the trip but i thought i'd post thus far..

with 7 people, and the boat, and the roof top luggage carrier full (probally well over capacity) and the cargo section full of ice chests and suitcases up to just above the back seat.... tires at 40 psi all around, we got 14.2mpg from dallas, texas to arkadelphia, arkansas. Cannot complain there.

We wound up leaving the boat in arkadelphia at a house her family still owns, so we didnt have that extra drag, and loaded down through the mountains we got 15.2. cannot complain there either. on flat ground after dropping the boat off, but still full load inside the truck and cargo on top, after resetting the mpg thingy and only doing hwy speeds, it averaged 18.1 until we got into the mountains.

overall, cannot complain a bit. its not quite as good as the Tundra at handling the boat's weight through some moderate ups and downs but still a very very adequate and capable truck. it probally would have been a little better with a few less people, we had 5 "full size" adults (we come from a large family- just small in number :)) and two kids in car seats....

very comfortable, engine spinning 1600 rpm with all that weight at 68mph on flat ground.... lots of room inside for all the stuff........ brakes very adequate, and although cumbersom to manually down shift coming down the mountains and steep grades, the transmission and engine worked well to keep the brakes cool. I wish it had a manual shift that was as easy as my tundra with the simple bump over to the side for up and down but oh well...

but im not using it next weekend to pick up a project car.... i'll stick with the tundra since its going to be kinda heavy and i need the trailer brake hookups...but i'll post over in the appropriate section when i get the car....its a 68 mercury cougar...complete car with a bad motor but its coming with a spare 302 or i could rebuild the stock one since its a numbers matching car..... 302 auto transmission AC car...Texas car all its life...good solid car, all glass intact etc. just needs some TLC. going to be fun project. ive been itching for something like this for years and a deal came up with the wife's uncle that i cannot resist.

Nice, I think 14.2 hauling the "Ozark Mountain Daredevils" is fairly good!
I like the older Cougars. When I was growing up, my buddies mom had one for years. She finally sold it in the late 80's, my buddy thought it was going to be his first car. My dad was a Ford guy that loved Mustangs, and I still remember him pointing out the turn signals, god I feel old now when I pointed them out on when the latest Mustang started using them.

dude those turn signals were/are freaking cool. im gonna convert the vacuum headlights to electric though probally...i'll see what all its going to need when i get my hands on it but i imagine i'll put electric motors in there to eleminate the droopy eye syndrome. and i love the fact the cougars arent as popular as the mustangs and arent seen everywhere like the stangs are.
