Good Morning,
My 2001 z71 Tahoe has 312,000 miles on her so I know things will arise that will need to be fixed. For awhile now my tow/haul button on the column shifter doesn't work and the truck goes into it on its own and I can't get it to come out, sometimes I can turn the truck off and restart it and it will not be in tow/haul mode but sometimes it stays in it. Was wondering before I took it to a shop if any one had a idea what could it be? Maybe a new column shifter will fix the problem?
Thanks in advance.

I have read that it`s common for the tow haul wire to break. It sounds like maybe yours is partially connected and causing your problem.

I know it`s a small red wire behind the dash near the shift lever. There is a writeup somewhere on this site on how to fix it and if i can find it i`ll post it here.

I couldn`t find it here but i checked youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtXPwPrXhFc

Skip to the three minute mark and you can see the wire.

Yep. The wire for the button runs through the shift lever and into the column. With over 312k miles, I'm sure that your shift lever has moved more than enough times to break the wire. Its an easy fix, just a PITA to get to it. You will have to remove the steering column housing/shroud and trace the wire from the shift lever and inspect it the whole way looking for the break. Then splice in a repair piece of wire and you should be good to go.
