I've been looking around at the projector retrofits that have been going on around here and am very impressed. My question is if i already have an HID kit in my car, can i just purchase the oem headlight housings and projectors, and pop my existing HIDS into those projectors. If this would work, it doesn't seem to expensive of a project, considering the headlights are $126 shipped on ebay, and the projectors range from $110-$195, plus $45 for shrouds. I'm fairly confident in my ability to complete the actual retrofit, just not sure if i have to purchase everything new or if i can use my existing kit.

If i can make this work with my existing kit, i'll order them up and give it a try.

Unfortunately its not that easy. Alot of the retrofit projectors use the D2S bulbs, which are held in by a spring clip, instead of twisted in. IMHO, a much better design. Im sure you can find a projector that will work with the bulbs you have, but your options will be limited..

I decided to go ahead and place my order. Ended up getting some OEM headlights off ebay. Ordered the Mini Morimoto DS2 bi-xenon projectors, 5000k bulbs, and the amp to d2s adapters to work with my existing ballasts and e46r shrouds. I am only going to be doing a lo beam setup, as its the most straightforward, and i am really just looking for a proper HID setup that functions properly. Maybe down the line ill go for a quad setup, but ill start of with this.

Sounds good ... doing low beam only means you don't have to worry about powering the solenoids, one less thing to deal with.

Let us know how it progresses.

Exactly I'm just gonna go as basic as possible and hopefully all goes smoothly. Hopefully everything gets in next week when I have a free weekend to spend on this

I too am interested as I am considering taking on such a project. It seems the complete kits are ~$370 before getting some donor headlights. Still would love to save $500 with a self-done job vs buying finished lights

I understand what you mean, there are definitely a few choices as far as what projector to go with. Ultimately, I chose to go with the mini morimoto d2s projector because it one of the smallest if not the smallest in size, which hopefully means less cutting and recessing into the headlight, and the fact that it was upgraded with a fx clear lense for better output.

My headlights came in yesterday, just waiting on the projector and i can get started on the retrofit.

Are you thinking about doing a quad setup or just a low beam setup? My low beam setup cost me $360 shipped including headlights, but i am retaining my existing ballasts.

Just low beams. I would need everything though - headlight casing, projectors, bulbs, ballasts, shrouds, wiring, etc
