How does it get reset, and how would you know if it has?

Sometimes they just seem to reset themselves. Mine has done it a couple of times. I suspect it's a software bug. Seemed to happen around 1000 hours, mine hasn't done it in quite a while. I programmed the hours back in as soon as I noticed it, so mine may be off by a few, but it is pretty close.

My gas mileage is tough to compare since most of my driving is a less distance of 8 miles.
So when you drive only local your MPG is naturally awful. But I fill up once every 6 weeks.

I use regular grade Shell gas...... Should I be using a higher grade anyway??

The only way I know of to tell is calculating average speed and seeing its impossible, like @swathdiver's 70 mph.
So if the vehicle is only used for family road trips and sees highway speeds 90% of it's life, that engine hour figure is impossible?

Mine reset when my youngest daughter ran the battery dead one evening at church. All kinds of codes set and gremlins popped up, like the navigation getting so bright it threw a too bright code. All was well the next day when the battery got a full charge on a long run.

I would but you don't HAVE to. Just my preference. I can always count on Shell to deliver about the worst MPGs possible too. My daughter recently re-affirmed this when she filled up her little Kia at a nearby Shell and noticed how much less range she had over the usual places, and WaWa too!

I would think that info would be stored in a non-volatile memory area that wouldn't get reset if the battery was disconnected or ran down, kind of like the mileage

There's an hour meter in the radio of my 2004 Pontiac Montana. That meant the radio at least had 5,800+ hours on it. It's probably original, don't remember its build date. So having said that, I'm certain there are other hour meters stored elsewhere in our trucks, probably in the radios somewhere and in the Onstar system and probably the ECM and or TCM too. Can't see them with the Tech-2, at least I haven't found them but the info may be available in those secret menus.

I think if you're over 50ish, it just seems pretty unlikely.
