very loose wobbly driver side stub shaft.

last year i did the carrier bearings in my front diff.

after going through this job i realized my oroblem wasnt fixed. i noticed that my driverside stubshaft coming out of the diff was really wobbly. about 1/4 inch of play.

The noise before and after the carrier bearings job was the same. so i am suspecting that the real culprit is the bearing that the stub shaft fits through between the outside of the case and the carrier. i do not know the name for it and it did not appear to come in my yukon bearing kit i ordered off amazon.

do other have huge slop in this area?

i will post a picture and video later when i get home.

i am thinking this gal shows the repair i need but at the same time im thinking i should have a look at the carriers now that they have been in for a year and the groan has remained.

thoughts suggestions welcome.

I think I remember your thread last year. I too have a wobbly shaft, and noise (classic carrier bearing whine) but also right turn growl. http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/threads/growl-with-right-turn.80614/

I do not know if the wobble is normal given I have noises too. Hope some others chime in



yeah i posted my progress on the diff drop and also did my oil pan gasket.

im willing to drop it again if need be i think i could do it in a saturday now but id like to hear from others who have fixed a wobbly shaft and irradicated the noise.

I'm hoping on gettin my axle bearings and seals done next week (although we'll see if any other components are shot like spanner lock tab etc). Will see if the wobbly drivers side axle stub wobbles less. According to members on another forum (gm full size I think) there's not suppose to be any wobble, just slight slip in-out along axle axis.

I'm about to replace mine. I rebuilt my entire front end, have new tires and still get a vibration. I found mine had about the same amount of play that you were talking about. I have the bearing and seal kit. I'm just waiting on the bearing puller I ordered.

Did mine this morning. Pretty straight forward job. Got it done in just over a few hours doing one side at a time. So far it seems tighter.

You guys have it figured out-there should be very little wiggle (technical term) on that shaft coming out of the differential. The bearing assembly is not very stout, so it is not surprising that it wears over time. It is more common to have more wear in the AWD trucks than in the 4WD versions. If that bearing wears out and doesn't get fixed for a long time, then the axle gets worn on the inside spines and can damage the differential as well. The first sign of wear is often gear oil leaking out around the axle from the seal going bad.

Many times, seals fail because worn bearings allow the axle to wobble, which ruins the seal. Also, if there is metal particles floating around in the differential, they can wear out the seal.
