VHT only looks good if you use clear coat after. If you don't clear them it looks dull. If you don't do them too dark (too dark looks cheap...looks better when you can see a bit of the lense color still ie. red) and add several coats of clear coat after they will look very good. I've used it many times. Just take your time and do LIGHT coats allowing plenty of dry time so you dont get drips. You can get a professional finish if you take your time.
Incidentally, mine are not done with VHT...I bought them tinted.

Yes! Perfect because I bought the clear coat and everything and then I started the thread and was told that but I'll take your word thanks my dudee!

No, this is not true. I have a friend that use to VHT lights back around 2006 and he used to use clear coat also. His would look pretty damn professional. A couple of months later he had people coming out the woodwork that wanted to beat his a**.....
Regency, if you do not have the money to do them professionally at the moment, just do not do them. It will be a waste of your time.

?? I don't understand...are you saying that they would change after a few months? The clear coat gives them a gloss finish and seals the job. There is no reason it would fade or change. Even VHT alone won't change in the elements. It just looks dull out of the can which is what the clear is for. I have done 4 sets of tail lights over the last 10 years. Never had any of them fade or change in any way...still have one of those vehicles and looks fine. I'm not saying VHT is awesome stuff but it really isn't that much different than what a pro would use. It's diluted paint which gives it the translucent properties. Just like painting your own car, if you don't apply it right it will look like crap and paint without clear will look dull. Do what you like but i always prefer to do things myself and tinting tails is an easy DIY.

I used vht for my third brake light and used really light coats. 2000 grit sandpaper to sand it down first. 4-5 coats i think is what i used. Definitely leave a a lil red showing, looks way better. Now mines only been that way for maybe a month or two tops, so havent seen any fading yet. Hell, its cheap man, do it yourself and see how it looks, if ya dont like it, clean it off and take it to the shop. But, on the flipside, time is money to some people, so if you got the money, just have them spray it. Im still learning all this stuff so i like to test things. Just my 2 cents. Either way let us see how it turns out!

The way the pros do it isn't by diluting paint. It's by adding black paint to clear coat.

If ya got the dough for a professional job, have it done that way. I just like to try stuff myself first. I mean, why not, its cheap. Whats a $20 job and a few hours of my time for tryin it out. It cant hurt to try ya know.
