Regulated Voltage Control, I think. Yours wouldn't have it, though, too early of a model. They put a sensor on the negative battery cable to enable varying the alternator charge.

Could be a problem in the alternator but could also just be in the stepper motor for the voltmeter gauge. Check voltage at battery with engine running and voltmeter gauge doing its wackout jitter. See how much the DC at the battery varies. Also check for AC millivolt (mv) at the battery too. You should see some.

It ended up being the alternator. It took forever to get the replacement one, since right after I ordered it, we got slammed with bad weather. Put the new one on, and good to go.
It wouldn't have been the stepper motor since this was effecting my charging system. You could see the headlights dim.
