Hopefully this will help someone out. Took me a while to get it diagnosed correctly.

My steering felt like something was rubbing when the steering wheel was at top dead center but only every once in a while. The steering wheel would catch and release especially when in tight curves at higher speeds.

Long story short, there wasn't anything rubbing or hanging up. After describing the symptoms to a mechanic friend of mine he said, I know exactly what that is, my truck was doing the same thing.

He told me to disconnect the electrical plug from the back of my power steering pump. I think he called it Speed Assist Steering or something like that. He said it was a problem that GM never got worked out and the best thing to do is just disconnect it.

Well, after running around with it disconnected for several weeks now, the problem has not occurred again and the steering overall is comfortably loose and very controllable.

Yup, if you want to get rid of it gm makes a revised piece or buy a 96 or older Power steering hose. You just got rid of the steering assist which over compensates at times and it dangerous especially on modified suspension. NO MORE STEERING EVO sensor replacements. If you steering is ever EFFED up again start looking at the front end now.

So your steering wheel position sensor was bad and you decided to just ditch / disable the system?
Mine had the same problem, replaced the sensor on the steering shaft and back to normal.

What have I lost by disabling it? The Hoe seems to handle perfectly now.

The sensor is easy to replace and it's cheap. There are some thread in the tech section on this.
