Hopefully this will help someone out. Took me a while to get it diagnosed correctly.
My steering felt like something was rubbing when the steering wheel was at top dead center but only every once in a while. The steering wheel would catch and release especially when in tight curves at higher speeds.
Long story short, there wasn't anything rubbing or hanging up. After describing the symptoms to a mechanic friend of mine he said, I know exactly what that is, my truck was doing the same thing.
He told me to disconnect the electrical plug from the back of my power steering pump. I think he called it Speed Assist Steering or something like that. He said it was a problem that GM never got worked out and the best thing to do is just disconnect it.
Well, after running around with it disconnected for several weeks now, the problem has not occurred again and the steering overall is comfortably loose and very controllable.
