Just dropped it off at dealership. Labor is $149.99 an hour. She asked if I was waiting…. I laughed and asked where I would be sleeping.

follow up with the total cost. I’m curious.

I was typing up a response prior to seeing this comment. I too thought a job like this was out of my realm, But I went for it and rebuilt the top end of my 6.0.

So far $900 to tear it down that comes off the price. Definitely a lifter issue they said.

Cam was damaged. 16 lifter/news plugs and wires/ new cam installed…$8100 Should be done in a few days. Greeeeeat. Guess I’ll start reading up on engine building and start planning for the next failure and I’ll build it so it WON’T break.

Did you ask if they would install none DOD cam and lifters. I believe they use different oil valley manifold also .Its your vehicle they should install what ever you want.

Not gonna bother now. I’ll save that for my undertaking with the next failure. I’ll keep it stock for now go with a tune of some sort to limit the AFM.

My god…. Honestly if I was in your shoes and if you have the time.. I’d ask them to put all the parts in a box and have it towed home.

I did it in an express van (similar engine). 1/3 of the work is from the engine bay, the other 2/3 from the floor of the cab. I imagine a truck bay has to be much less of a pain in the ass.

I just went back and looked at my receipt, I paid $1500 for parts to rebuild my heads, did some extra just because I was in there and replaced my alternator with a high output, replaced oil pump, timing chain, guides, water pump. That price included getting the heads machined at a shop. However, I didn’t use all Gm parts

You could probably do this job with GM parts for I’m guessing $2500?

If you’re ballsy enough to pick up and wrench and get your hands dirty then I think you can handle a straight forward job like this. I’d really think about it if you want to save a couple thousand.

You may want to ask about the cost to replace the engine. My father's failed and it was a few grand more for a new engine. But, it was right after covid, so they were back ordered a free months. He couldn't wait.

$7300 plus about $530 in taxes. They couldn’t give me a printout because they said their system is still down from the dealer cyber attack so I have to wait. As on as I get it I’ll post it here. So I don’t REALLY know what they say they did. Runs a lot better though. 2 year warranty. Bought an engine stand and am going to start collecting parts. Next time it’ll be a whole new engine that goes in. Looking at electronically stopping the AFM in the mean time. Next engine WILL NOT have that garbage.
