That’s awesome! I’ve been thinking that when my gov- bomb goes I’ll get a Detroit locker but I’ve always been concerned I’ll **** it up. Maybe I have a chance after all!

You can def DIY it. As long as you reuse the ring gear and don't move the pinion, it's a DIY job.

Here were my resources.

Main DIY video. I did a better method for putting the bearing on though by using the ball joint press sleeve that fit perfectly.

Thanks for the great thread on this. If/when the time comes, I will likely do the job myself. The TrueTrac definitely looks like the way to go, also.

IMO Detroit locker for the win in the back. On these heavy rigs you won't feel it lock and unlock as many complain about. Ran a DL in the back and a True trac up front on another truck. A International Scout II with a LS6 454 T400 boy I miss that thing.

Personally, I think if my G80 ever (when) takes it's long walk to the boneyard, I will replace it with a Truetrac. I like the normally unlocked and locked when needed approach, versus the normally locked and unlocked when needed approach of the Detroit Locker.

I probably would feel differently if I was doing more serious off-road or drag strip kind of stuff, but I really don't do much rock crawling (BLM roads, fire roads and FS access is pretty much the extent of my off roading), so for me I think I would stick with the Truetrac.

Good breakdown here. Seems for daily driving, the truetrac is the choice. Weekend drag car/cruiser, the locker could take the edge there.

I wonder which one would be best for a blown and cammed 6.0 AWD. I think I went through the deciding process a couple years back and decided on the Detroit Locker but I’m not sure now. I installed a girdle on mine to reinforce the bearing caps to help with one of the common failures.

For AWD I would think the locker would be overkill.
