What’s the years with the AFM problems?

I currently have a 5.3 2012 tahoe with the AFM so far no problems. What’s the years that the tahoe is prone to develop mechanical problems due to the AFM. I was doing my research and supposedly GM fixed after 2012. I should get it tuned anyways or leave it alone? Thanks for the responses in advance.

The updates were made in 2011. Lots of people go 200K+ miles without problems while others barely make it 120K. My 2009 had all the new parts put on at 110K.

If you disable it via the computer, the parts are still there of course but the lifters will likely last a lot longer and the solenoids in the VLOM are turned off.

I was hell bent to remove it from my truck physically as most are after first buying theirs and reading all the stories. I had my truck tuned and turned it off and then later found out that it had all the new parts. Even entertained turning it back on but turner said the truck is too heavy to be of benefit anyway.

I think it's good insurance to simplify the operations of the engine. Our Gen IV engines had more trouble with AFM than the Gen Vs and the latest ones now turn off any number of all cylinders so GM is surely comfortable with the latest improvements.

That being said, it was implemented because of government regulations, not because of any performance gains and these Gen IV engines do not make enough horsepower compared to the Gen Vs in V4 to push a loaded Suburban along the highway. Maybe while burning E85 but mine came on only while going downhill mostly and when coasting when it was active after I bought it.

AFMs worst enemy is dirty oil.

2007 retired Police Tahoe 83,000 miles. #4 exhaust lifter collapsed while going 70 mph.

I have a 2008 and after failure did a driveway rebuild with Comp Cam etc... truck great! See my other post copied below..
2012 should be a SAFE year for AFM. I have it in my 6.0 Caprice and 121,000 no issues. When I get time I'll do Cam swap etc, but no issues. I am going to get 2012 for Granddaughter, safest thing for a 16year old..needs a tank around them lol.. I'd give her 2008, but with the cam and tune...well..no. 2012's around for 10k range.
I have my 6.0 L77 and fresh 6L80 with ALL computers and elecs available from my Caprice, just got totaled by a weird 3/4 front end hit, no airbag deployed

CHANGE OIL BY EVERY 4000, 5-30 MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC WITH AC DELCO FILTER.

When my 2008 finally gave up (Even after dealer AFM rebuild), I went with Comp Cam etc..and all LS6 stuff etc.. did heads, bypassed cats, custom tune; all easy in the driveway and truck is dynamite.
The dealer rebuild didn't last 30,000 miles, due to fact that dealer ignored the upgraded TSB fix and PPV Program. (That dealer is gone and not GM's fault lol)
In any event, truck is GREAT that way heading for 300k!
By the way, if anyone is having issues and wants an L77 with fresh beefy rebuilt 6L80 and all computer and elec from my front frame damages personal 2012 PPV 6.0 Caprice, get hold of me.. good swap!
