The factory x-bars are only $180 or so. They come with a special allen wrench with a torque indicator to prevent over-tightening the nuts. I've seen them on eBay for that price. and knock-offs are cheaper

be aware that the roof rails have positions for 3 x-bars. I need to pickup a 3rd for mine. Just cannot justify spending the money for a purely aesthetic reason

Also, since the cross bars stick up above the roof rails, you will have reduced clearance for parking garages — especially older ones in downtown areas.

I opted for the factory bars, because they’re the cleanest looking of the options. Thing is they’re somewhat convex as opposed to being straight and if you were to cross-section a bar the front is higher than the back much like an aircraft wing. These two things have made the bars a real hassle for carrying a loaded down Yakima Skybox 21 or my 13’ Sit-On-Top Kayak. It’s a great looking design - very low profile and quiet - but not very functional. I still get by with my GM bars, but I have to use rubber friction pads to get a good grip with the clamps.

The smartest move is to get some legit cross bars from Thule or Yakima that will provide the most secure mounting surface. It’ll cost you more, but you’ll get to carry stuff with confidence. If you want a full length rack you might take a look at the Rhino Rack Pioneer: http://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/prod...eer-platform/pioneer-platform-84-x-56-_ja9787

I had a full rack on a Land Rover D2 some many years back and it was awesome, noisy, and almost never used; great light mounting platform though.

The noise is wind and the tone will vary from rack to rack; All depends on the design.

On my Discovery 2 I had an original Safety Devices roof rack (standard height) with four Hella 4000s up front. Between it and the BFG MTs it was so loud that at highway speeds it would be difficult to hold a conversation with someone sitting in the second row.

Recognize that it was essentially a jungle gym clamped to the roof of a truck that wasn’t well sound deadened to begin with.

I’d be surprised if you noticed much wind noise from any of the roof rack options on the market suited for a Tahoe barring a universal fit basket rack. A wind fairing can helpful. Don’t over think it.

I've had them installed since May 2014 on a Tahoe and a Suburban. About 60,000 miles between the 2 rigs.

I've never heard noise from them. And they're pretty robust. Here is where I drove from LA to Connecticut going 75+ mph. Held up fine. I will buy these before anything aftermarket.
