I got new tires recently and I acknowledged that the spare is likely old and cracked. So I took it to the tire shop and they couldn't get the hoist to lower. Did some research, and the safety latch wouldnt release. So I went medieval on its ass today. New hoist gets here tomorrow from Amazon and I'll drop the tire in the am for new rubber. She didn't come quietly, but she eventually came.

If the safety latch doesn't release there is a procedure outlined in the owners manual that uses the jack to release it.

I had the same problem. I slipped a long extension with a 13 mm socket, through the rim of the spare into the single bolt that holds the entire hoist to the underbody of the truck. I just unbolted the whole assembly, with tire. Careful your arm doesn't get caught between the rim and the ground. Once it was all down I just jammed a screwdriver in the safety latch and pried it open. Beats cutting the cable. But then I wouldnt have gotten the opportunity to get out the air chisel and grinder and go primal on it.. What fun is that?!

Amazes me that, with the same design for decades and after all these years with the failure rate of these things, that some shmuck at GM didnt come up with a kevlar/nylon/abs latching system.....shit, a kevlar vest can stop a bullet ...
I was thinking the same thing they could have used graphite or aluminum or anything that doesn't rust or even just coated it in plastic or something

That would be too easy. That was actually my 2nd hoist. My gf got a flat--without me of course--and someone was helping her, couldn't get it down, so they had to cut it. Wasn't cutting this one!
