That's funny. My closest LKQ used to be a locally owned business. When LKQ bought them, the prices doubled on most things. And they started charging for EVERY LITTLE THING. I can't walk out with so much as a hose clamp. The old guy gave that stuff away. And the old owner offered a $20 annual membership instead of the $2 per trip cover charge (which LKQ raised to $3). So I think LKQ is high.

Ya know... that might explain it. There's an LKQ about 40 miles away, but it's not a U-pull-it kind of place. They have mostly late models and only their employees can pull the parts. The cars with broken or removed glass or doors are kept covered in white plastic to protect the interior. It's more for body shops performing insurance repairs rather than Joe Schmo looking for a taillight for his '02 Accord. This place I went to had that locally-owned, first-name-basis vibe. We could negotiate prices on the smaller items. Around every major holiday, they had 40 and 50%-off sales. Maybe LKQ has or had franchises and closed 'em down.

My local LKQ used to be a u-pull it type of place before it was an LKQ. When they bought the yard it changed and now only employees can pull parts. You have to call or go to the counter now and look for your parts, and get prices. If you call they put you on hold forever. It’s not a very user friendly way to buy used parts. It takes forever and feels like they just want to sell the expensive pieces. All the small stuff must get thrown away or recycled. I also miss the good ol days.

Yup. There's a second LKQ half a mile from my local you-pull-it with a walk-up counter for "professionals" to go buy used parts. I haven't shopped there. But I've heard prices are pretty steep. The one I visit won't negotiate at all. Even if the part is damaged, they won't discount a penny over whatever the computer says the price is. Way back in this thread, I posted a pic of the trim parts I got. You can plainly see the SAW KERF in the big PS dash piece, where some bozo hacked out the airbag. Discount? Nope. I was almost surprised when they took it back. I expected them to deny the return and accuse me of damaging it. But they took it.

If they ship it to you and it’s damaged like that, they give it to you free so they don’t have to pay return shipping. At least they did for me. I forgot that’s how I got my console for free. The mounting base had been sawzalled so they didn’t have to pull the seats to remove it. I just had to buy a used mount for about $40 iirc.

And a whole lot more I understand. My brother runs a Pioneer head unit with one of those gizmos, and it displays virtual gauges, reads and clears trouble codes. Sounds like a techies’ dream.

Yeah it doesn't display a whole bunch of parameters, but I can get trans and coolant temps and some other things which is nice.

Get this one guys… last week moved apartments. Trans was giving me the 2000 rpm shudder occasionally, figured it’s in the BBP tune cuz it went away when I switched to tow/haul mode. Don’t have time to go look at it cuz I flew to Denver for business trip. (Avis upgraded me to a 21 Denali btw, love that hud) today I get back to Dallas and drive home. For some odd reason the aftermarket stereo didn’t work the whole way home and I was in traffic 90 minutes to go 29 miles. Trans didn’t skip a beat. Stopped for e85 and when I fired it back up the stereo worked again and in the 1 mile it took me to get to my apartment my trans did the shuddering thing again. I’m thinking i need a fresh battery and check my grounds.. any opinions?
