What else to replace when I put in my new cam?

ok looking at getting the comp cams cam #54-424-11. I believe it is the high lift version of the 54-412-54.

Any way looking at what else i need to install.

Hardened pushrods. are they 7.4" long still?
New valve springs. Do yellow ls6 springs work w/ this cam or do i need more?
Timing set. Is a stock one ok or do i need a "true roller"?


Anything else while i am in there?

I called and asked them. Or you can use their program that gives you what else is needed with the cam you pick out.

Don't forget all new gaskets, I know its common sense but sometimes you forget the simple little things.

yep, gaskets were on the list. Still trying to figure out if stock timing set is ok..or if a person "really" needs a performance one. Not sure what could be all that different about them other than price and material they are made out of.

How many miles are on yout chain? I would at least go with an ls2 chain, you also need a new crank bolt, fluids, etc.. Good time to do a tune up also..

LS6 springs are good to .550 lift. thats cams probably 529 at most.. Would be cutting it close. If it were me I would run at least a beehive spring at minimum.. Something like a comp 918 or pac1218! Pacs are my preference.. Had good luck with them and manleys..
If you want good prices on those items let me know..

Also pushrods should be a 7.4" go with chromoly lke 110 bux...

New crank bolt for sure. The bolts are torque-to-yield, which means once they're torqued down, you can't reuse them.
Depending on your mileage, it may not be a bad idea to install a fresh oil pump and a double roller timing chain since you're already there. Only a few more minutes of time.
7.4" rods and LS6 springs should work with that cam with the stock heads.
When you remove the front cover, stuff a rag at the bottom where the inside of the oil pan becomes exposed in case you accidentally drop a bolt or something, that way nothing ends up in your oil pan that shouldnt be there.

Can someone explain the difference in timing chains/gear sets?? What is a true roller, vs what was in a stock motor? How is it better? Just asking cause i dont know, and because of the price difference.

The cam i am looking at 54-424-11 has a valve lift of .558/.563. (1400-6700rpm range)so will LS6 springs work or not?? The ones i saw were the yellow beehive style, they said good for lifts up to .580 they gave a GM part # of 12586484. And said stock retainers work with them..? Not sure if that is too close to maximum for comfort or not.

I am just looking at these options to keep this on a budget...if i had tons of money laying around i would buy the whole kit from comp.

Anyone know someone running this cam? I would be very interested to hear how it does

if you check around you can get better pricing on the pac 1218 and the 1518 I believe. but those are the parts i'm going to be running i believe
