What is this oil leak and broke a half shaft on my SSV

Hello everyone. the other day I broke my SSV and at the same time, it developed an oil leak. I need some advice on how to fix it.

What is this bump-out just above the oil filter? This is leaking oil and I would like to know what it is. I would like to replace the cover and gasket.

Also, I broke a passenger half shaft. Has anyone broken one and can I just change the shaft out or will it most likely have broken the whole differential? I have never broken a front differential before. The truck has close to 170k on it and I broke it while trying to back into my driveway the was full of ice and the front was on dry ground. Plus with all the snow we just got I was having some fun this weekend in the snow getting sideways.

If you torqued the housing that much, I would thoroughly inspect everything in the front differential.

I'm kind of thinking this all over and it might just be easier to replace the whole Diff. I can get a new one for around $800 on rockauto or find something cheaper on eBay. I am looking around right now.

Like @wjburken said, inspect everything. You likely damaged the shaft when the housing broke. I would replace it, your call though.

I would look above that block off plate in case the leak is from above and draining down to that plate. Maybe rear of intake or valve cover or whatever.

You did not say what year rig you have so I guessed at 2007 and 5.3 engine.

When you pull out the front diff, check the bushings in the diff mounts. I just replaced mine, because I found one on the driver’s side separated while I was installing a lift. That would force the passenger side to take more torque and potentially break just as yours did.

I wouldn't waste time checking the bushing, just replace while you have the diff out, save yourself the time and effort later.

I don’t believe mine damaged the half shaft, so I’ll simply change the housing out. It shouldn’t be too hard (just so long as I keep track of all the internals in order).
