It will eventually fail and you will have to buy a new one. They are only $25 or so. If you notice the hvac controls not working properly that is the guy you talk to right there. easy to replace too.

Mine made the most aggravating buzzing sound when sitting idle in my car... I took the fan out and my auto AC still works like a champ.

That I believe is the microphone.
At least thats what it looked like when I had my console apart - but mines an 03
