What should I do next with my air conditioning?

Finally turned on my air conditioner on my 2002 Tahoe LTZ about a month ago and it blowed hot air despite working find last year. Turned out that I didnt have a belt anymore from the crank to the compressor...Strange... So while I was installing a new belt I noticed the idler needed replacing so I replaced that as well. Nice cold air until again until today which started blowing hot air again. Looked again and my darn belt is gone again. Never heard any squealing or anything. Possibly wrong belt? The initial belt that was missing was on there about 5 years. Is there like a heavy duty belt that needs to be put on. I just put a $20 belt on there. Or is this a sign of something more expensive giving hints of its demise?

Check for anything out of alignment. Watch the clutch engage a few times but not too close so you don't get whacked. If the compressor mounts are cracked it can tilt and cut the belt. But I don't think that is a common problem.

Had the same prob a year ago. 2 belts later and same thing. Bet it will idle and be fine. Soon as you add throttle it snaps belt. Or as mine did it snapped the tensioner. The pump is momentarily stopping or freezing. The pump is full of ac oil that is draining to the lowest part of the system-the pump. I have a friend that works at gm and this is a fairly common problem with these trucks. The fix for mine was a new pump, a full evacuation of the fluids and a filter that goes inline to hold the oil from draining back and filling the pump. NOT CHEAP at all. Works great now. Will see if I can find the filter number for ya. It's a gm part #. Hope this helps.

JetBlackNali is 100% correct. Mine did the same thing. I broke 5 belt tensioner before I gave up and replaced the compressor. I bought a genuine AC Delco OEM compressor from Rockauto for right around $300. I also replaced the drier, the orifice tube, and the o ring seals. Then I had a shop vacuum it and recharge it properly. All together I spent just under $600 for everything. Cheapest price quote I got from a shop was $1200 to replace everything. So I saved $600 by installing it myself. Its not too hard, just a pain in the ass to get to it. Plus I was able to use a OEM compressor. Every shop I got a price from said that the price was with an aftermarket or reman compressor. One shop agreed to use a Delco compressor, but they stood firm on a 1700$ price tag. EFF that!!!

Thanks you guys. I actually found the belt that was broke and it was a clean break. No shredding of the belt at all. I decided to pop on a new belt in case the other belt was defective, since I got a free replacement. Hopefully this holds. I watched the belt/pulleys for about about minute as a friend of mine pushed on the gas and had the truck revving around 4k. It looked fine with no locking up, noise, or wobble. If it snaps again I will assume its the compressor and take on that project.
