Whine under the hood?

yeah water pump, alt, ps pump, fan, and a/c will stop working all at the same time but there is not usually any physical damage at all. cross rib cracking or some minor glazing is ok. but if you see cracking going thru entire height of rib or every 3mm throughout the entire length, rib separation of any kind or cord separation the belt should go. generally the oem serpentine belts of obs and newer were to be replaced every ten years or 150,000 miles. they are of EPDM material design.

I would guess power steering pump; that's the first thing that comes to my mind. See if you can hear it if you turn the wheels left and right while idling.
