G80 Axle Positraction, Limited Slip

During normal driving conditions, the MLocker (G80) functions as a light-bias limited slip differential. When a low-traction situation occurs that causes a wheel speed difference greater than 100 RPM, a flyweight mechanism opens to engage a latching bracket.

Sounds like you should drain and add the correct fluid to give it a chance. "10950849 Lubricant, Rear Axle (1 litre)"

This is exactly why, no matter what the weather conditions are, I always add the called for fluid and don't mess with a guess that it needs.


When you took it in did they show you the metal shavings? They should have or at least supplied cell pics of what they saw.

No pictures. I did everything short of accuse them of not putting fluid in after they drained it last time...didnt mean to...
I asked the receptionist (here lies the problem) if the ring and pinion were ok sense they described metal shavings in the diff..he said just the pinion bearing was really bad and the R&P were ok...
never get actual conversation w/ mechanics at this place.

G80 rpo in cars means it is a limited slip...
G80 in a light truck means its a locker...

Right? They should not have put an additive in my diff?

From what I've read in the past, when using GM recommended fluid (GL5 P/N 10950849 like stated above) no additive is needed because it's already in the fluid.

That additive used to be blue. Service manager was always telling my G80 needed it. If it still is blue you might want to check the fluid to see if they actually put it in there.

But that sucks. Mine screwed up around 95k if it makes you feel any better

The invoice above says the did. This is my question. Should they have put it in or not?

AFAIK it is not used for the G80. That's what the bulletin says right?

Thats what Im trying to determine for sure. Does a 2007 Tahoe 4x4 with a G80 rpo code have limited slip diff? .....or is it a locker?

Heck, if they added the limited slip additive the first time I brought it in for a fluid change, could that have cause it to start whining and damaged it?
