RPM hopefully too high for a 4.8 also...almost 3k rpm at hwy speeds is ridiculous

Any small-block that can rev to 6K rpms isn't out of its range there. I'd be willing to bet it's not that bad actually. If you look at the torque curves with the factory setup it doesn't actually hit peak torque till after 3K rpm, and you should theoretically get the best mileage at peak torque. However, when you're reving the motor you also have more parasitic losses so with a torque curve as high as these are the theoretical won't work out quite right in practice.

i was just thinking about this today, funny i find this thread. not sure on my gears, can any one tell me how to find out?

i drive around tow in "3" all the time, i feel i waste more gas with the truck "lugging" in "D". the rpms have to match the speed and weight, lower rpms are not always most fuel saving. on the freeway in OD i can cruise at 1000 rpm at 60 mph
