Will not start and keeps blowing # 20 (prnd21) fuse when shifting out of park

How many times has a shade tree mech got you into a bigger bind than when you started

Ok I got my truck back from the shade tree mechanic, thought I would
Save a few bucks and do not have a lift. look at me now.

It's a 1998 gmc Yukon 4x4 5.7 liter.

Got it back from a transmission replacement. He said come and get it he was
Tired of fooling with it.

Trans. Was in but it would not start. Checked all the fuses and they were fine.
I would turn the key on and lights would come on and fuel pump primes.
Then go to start it and nothing would happen. Lights would dim a little and the shift indicator light would stay off til i would turn the key over. I would let off the key in the start position and light goes back off. Being the novice mechanic I am, I got it to start by jumping a wire from the starter relay to the big yellow ignition wire that comes out of the ignition switch harness. It starts with the key this way. I tried replacing the starter relay with the one out of my wrecked yukon thats works. No luck. Also when I did get it cranked up I shifted out of park into reverse and the # 20, (prnd21) 10 amp fuse keeps blowing which puts the trans into limp mode. ....... I purchased I wrecked 1998 Yukon when the trans. Went out. So I have alot of extra parts around. I thought it might be the ignition switch. So I took off the one from the wrecked one, which by the way I drove it home, it runs fine just has a bent frame. And i have the same results . I replaced the neutral saftey switch with no luck .
Also I thought I might have a bad wiring harness going to the trans. So I replaced it from the tailshaft all the way to the back of the motor, including the o2 sensor wires with the same results. I have no obd 2 reader so I have 2 problems here, even help with just one would be greatly appreciated. plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help.

This is my first post I am at my wits end with this truck.

:welcome:

The #20 fuse splits into to two circuits. One going to the instrument cluster and one to the tranny. So I would like to request for the first step that while a good fuse is in #20 remove the gauge cluster, attempt to start the truck. Does it function normally? Did the fuse blow again?

I would look very carefully at any place on the bell housing that touches the back of the engine to check for pinched wires of one of the harnesses.

Also check near the exhaust (melted harness) .

Ok I put new fuse in and removed the cluster and same result. Does not even turn over. As far as the wires being pinched or burnt I replaced the entire wiring harness from the t-case all the way to the back of the motor. I had an extra harness from the wrecked Yukon I bought. Any other ideas you can think of. Thanks in advance.

When I put the key in and put it in the on position everything works as it should, except
The shift indicator light is off. When I try to start it the shift indicator light comes on but nothing happens. When I let off the key from start to on position. The shift indicator light goes back off.

If I am jumping a wire from the back of the ignition switch harness to the starter relay...
Wouldnt be something in-between those two points.
Plz correct me if I'm wrong.
I could start it this way but since I just replaced the ignition switch so I don't want to do it this way, I do not want to short it out or something

That fuse is fine but I will replace just in case

You may need to flip your power block over for an inspection of wire. As I see it you seem to have a short(possibly high resistance)on the power supply to tranny to blow a fuse but when starting the nearby starting circuit circuit leaks on to the tranny circuit upstream of the problem and activates the gear indication. With it all back together remove the starter relay make sure all fuses are good again and move key to start again. Any fuses blow did gear indicator come on only when in start?
