Would this be a dumb idea?

You are right. It is not an emergency brake. It is a parking brake that can be used in an emergency, if needed. The worst thing to do to a parking brake, is not use it when you park.

I think the worst thing you can do to a transmission is not use the parking brake. LOL! I see them bouncing off the "Park" pawl all the time.

If you can get a person to think of it as a parking brake instead of an emergency brake, that helps the explanation. In salt on the roads areas lot's of people have had the park brake stick and had to deal with that and then they just get used to never setting it.

My wife sometimes uses my Ram 2500 and hauls our 6x12 cargo trailer. She refurbs furniture. We live on a hill and she can't back the trailer uphill into our driveway so she has me do it. I go out to meet her and the truck and trailer are pointing downhill so she pushes the parking brake on and throws it in park. I gasp as it bounces off the transmission park stop. She can't push the parking brake far enough down to fully engage it. Short leg syndrome I call it. I say a few choice words and admonish her but as usual I'm nuts and she did it correctly. Just like coming down the long grade while riding the brake and not downshifting. "I'M NOT DOING THAT!" Guess I'm hallucinating then. LOL! (actually I'm crying) What do ya do right?

When I moved out to Oregon 25+ years ago I did a bunch of off roading. I had a purpose built 73 K5 Blazer that was decked out and had 1 ton axles at each end. I trailered it to lots of trails. I loved my Duramax Diesel truck I towed with for going up and down passes. Never had to worry about brakes and that Allison Transmission was the bomb.

I off loaded and on loaded on lots of steep trails, if no staging area was available. That PARKING BRAKE was very important. It is a thing that needs taught and taught and taught. Hell, lots of drivers have it driven into their heads to change the engine oil on a regular basis, the park brake can be taught too.

Yes, and when you set the park brake, you do it with the transmission in neutral and foot on brake and then shift to park.

I heard a loooong time ago to keep it in drive (or reverse) with brake compressed and set the parking brake. And then switch to park. Been doing it like this for 20+ years without thinking about it. Have I been doing it wrong this entire time?! Please explain!

i do it this way too, but ill let off the foot brake to let the e brake hold it, some times they roll a bit till they lock up tight, once the cars fully being held in place in the e brake, then it goes in park.

as for leaving pull it into a gear, then let the e brake go. pulls out of park like its on flat ground every time. (as long as the e brake works as it should) i only do this on hills, most of my parking is flat ground where i have tire depressions that hold the truck in place. (ive fully made my spot mine over time) i still put it in neutral, then into park.

funny now that i think about it, i also put my camaro in neutral before park, because i back up till i hit a brick with the back tire, so pop it in N let it roll off the brick then park. maybe im weird, maybe im a genus? lol
