Likely illegal if installed, probably causes your vehicle to violates federal area requirements for brake lighting. CHMSL must be 2903 mm^2 (4.5 in^2) and meet the minimal visibility requirements. Guessing the vinyl over the stock CHMSL causes a fail.

See section 5.1.1.27 of 49 CFR 571.108

Never understood people who take risks like this; personally I don’t want to give anyone an extra reason to pull me over…
