Why are we turning the ignition on and off WITH the key?

Why are we turning the ignition on and off WITH the key instead of that little gizzmo that used to be on vehicles that stuck out slightly from where the key was inserted, like on my 1995 Chevrolet pickup, and is where you applied your thumb and a finger to turn the ignition on and off rather than the key itself? It just seems that over time, the chances of a key breaking off are greatly increased.

Could it be that GM wants to be able to sell more God-awful expensive keys, and the "management" decided this is another way to stick it to the owner?

When the key is inserted on these SUVs there is a little protruding plastic surround that you can grab with your thumb to start the car.
Or you could install a push start button!

In GM's defense it would seem not having the plastic to grab would make the truck harder to steal. I know when the bastards tried to steal mine they used that plastic as leverage to bust the ignition. still didn't get the truck, but my ignition was busted.

You turned the key on cars for 30 years before anybody put grab handles on the ignition key slot. Didn't kill many keys.
