I guess I haven't been paying attention because I just divided my 16 year odometer reading by our Tahoe's engine hours reported on the dash readout and apparently I've been cruising along at about an average of 116 mph, FOR 16 years. Obviously that didn't happen so should I presume that the engine hour reading is erroneous?

The engine hours have reset several times on my Yukon. I have a theoretical time of 6,549 hours after 204,280 miles. Her average speed with me for the last eight years has been 31.2 mph. My fuel used has rolled over after 10,000 gallons. It's now almost 14,000 gallons since new.

My 2013 Sierra has 112K miles and her original engine hours are listed as 4,544.1 hours for an average speed of 24.7 mph. When we got her, her average speed since new was 23.0 mph.

listing 1060 hours for over 123,000.
Does it reset the hours when the battery is disconnected?

It can. When I've properly changed a battery the information stayed in memory. When the cars were jumped and they often had their counters reset. My Yukon just reset again when my wife tried to jump it. It did not reset when I changed the battery a few days later.
