The fuel pump that did that to me was an autozone aftermarket fuel pump, it wasn't even on the suv 8 months. I bit the bullet and installed an oem pump and it's been trouble free for over 5 years now.

Did the shop remove the plugs for any reason prior to the removal of the intake manifold? If the plugs get over tighten the ceramic breaks off and can fall into the cylinder.
How often do you have folks ride in the back? I hardly use the rear heater, the front heater heats up the suv pretty good reckon I hardly ever have anyone ride back there.
If you end up replacing the heater please do a write up. This might help someone having the same issue you are experiencing.
Use synthetic oil and you should be good for 200k miles. I would not delete anything until you have the rollors get stuck. I have several friends with the NNBS platform go almost 200k before they start having DOD issues.

Has this vehicle used synthetic oil or conventional oil its lifetime?
Conventional oil will plug up the oil passages if not change within the recommended oil changes.
Sounds like a stuck lifter to me, remove the valve covers and check the lifters for play. If the engine has used conventional oil the lifter is definitely stuck. It's hard to swallow that you need a new engine, these LS engine will go for 300k miles if you maintain them. Get another mechanic...
If you drove the suv long with low oil pressure you may have damaged it. That would cause the oil to have metal flakes.
Do as the others members suggested,
Do a mechanical pressure test
Test the pick up tube o ring.
Has the vehicle had synthetic oil changes? Conventional oil gumps up and plugs...

I have bought plenty of new and used vehicles, with that said I've always put a heavy down payment and only finance for 4 years max. I find it hard to pay bank interest for longer than that when I can keep that $. When it's time for a new vehicle I always sell the old to private parties...
