    Cruise Control intermittently stops working

I had the same issue. The switch was worn and would flicker. Cruise is set to disengage when ANY signal gets to it. It would flicker inside and you wouldn't see the brake lights light up. Eventually, it began to light the brake lights up and drain the battery. I replaced the switch under the...

    Any GM a/c techs here?

Add a bunch of dirt and grease and your set up looks identical to mine. A supplier I used when I ran a shop is still in business and my account is still there. (35 years later. Prices have gone up though.)

    Any GM a/c techs here?

I'm trying to get my a/c working on my 2000 Cadillac Escalade. It's an early model so it's more akin to a '99. I learned early on to get parts for a '99 as the late '00 models are more like the '01. I was trained in servicing automotive a/c systems but that was nearly 50 years ago so I'm...

    White letters in or out

I'm rather chea......er.....thrifty. I put white out if the tire has them as you pay for the white, get some use out of it. I don't know how many vehicles I've had over the years. somewhere around 250-300. If I get a tire with white letters, they always go out. As for the trend towards huge...

    Impala electrical woes.

Well, I've traced a bunch of the problems and corrected them. New fuel pump (old one dropped some pieces and was failing) checked the power and ground wires at the pump, got the horn working again (damaged fuse block caused the fuse to blow), found the problem with the rear brakes, replaced a...

    Brake pedal fluttering

When a warp is minor, it will be worse when the brakes are hot. After a while the heat and cool cycle will make it worse. Eventually you will have it hammering your foot when you stop and sometimes the steering wheel will shake going down the road. When that happens, your braking is compromised.

    Impala electrical woes.

I've got an '04 Impala I recently picked up cheap. The previous owner let a lot of little issues build up then got rid of it. 80K in two years. $1000 and I drove it as soon as I got home. Most of the issues are straightforward mechanical problems. I do have one issue that I'd like some input on...

    Am I Thinking Right???

I've rebuilt many wheel cylinders over the years and a few calipers. I have the special honing tools to do it but it's easier to just get a remanufactured unit. In fact, if the bleeder screw breaks off when you try to bleed it, replace the part as it'll fail in the near future. When you said the...

    1000 point question

They are required on heavier GVW vehicles. Some 3/4 ton trucks have them and all 1 ton and heavier specification trucks have them. The problem with just adding them is you're adding holes to the roof. Be sure to use clear RTV silicone, ESPECIALLY on the screws so it doesn't rain inside when it...

    Brake pedal fluttering

Quite likely you have a warped rotor or drum. It will be mild at first but will get worse. Lots of things can cause it. Hit a cold puddle of water when the brakes are hot, over torquing the lug nuts or slamming on the brakes at the last minute repeatedly. Sometimes repeatedly slapping pads when...

    2013 Tahoe..Preventive vs Reactive

Follow your manual on fluids but follow the "severe duty" schedule. If your oil changes should bedone every 5000 miles but severe duty is 3000, do it then. Compared to a new engines, oil changes are cheap. New filter EVERY time too. On shocks and ball joints, when a joint rattles, replace it. It...

Hurricane hits you have 6.2 engine and requires premium gas you use regular does you engine break

Use the highest octane rating you can find. Unless you're operating at WOT, you may not notice any difference at all. Maybe slightly less fuel mileage but on these types of vehicles, you're not going to drop from 35 to 29 mpg. Get ethanol free if you can. Otherwise just run it and get to safety...

How to use jack stands properly

I have an old jack stand that's about 30-35 yars old. It's pretty much useless but I keep it both as a reminder and a lesson if I'm teaching a kid to work on cars. I was crawling under a '69 Chrysler with a bottle jack and the jack popped out and the car came down on the stand. It flattened the...

Found the limits of my 4WD Denali with all season tires in snow

I remember one car I had that hammered the snow great. A 1966 Chevy Biscayne with snow tires. There's just something about the weight distribution on those cars where grippy snow tires would go through many inches of snow.

03 Tahoe Z71 runs great, bad gas mileage.

I wish I got that good a fuel economy reading. I get 9 around town and 11 on the highway, with a tail wind. However, I have some really NASTY off road tires that eat snow and mud. Now, a cooler thermostat is BAD mojo on a fuel injected engine. You MUST run the OE temperature thermostat. FI uses...

Found the limits of my 4WD Denali with all season tires in snow

I've got an early 2000 Escalade (just a Denali or Tahoe with fancy trim) which is basically a 1999 and it has the automatic setting for 4WD. After 50 years of driving I know when I need 4X4 or not. I went upstate a bit and went through 14 inches of snow on unplowed back roads as well as the ice...

    4wd crapped out on me

Probably just a dirty connection. Like another poster said, engage 4X4 every now and then just to keep mechanisms from getting stiff. Back in '02, I bought a fresh off lease Jeep Cherokee. Except for where a womans rings scratched the paint at the door handles, it looked and smelled brand new...

Looking To Join The Club... Denali, or Escalade??

My Escalade is older (early 2000) but compared the the Tahoe's and Denali's I've seen around here, I've gotten to prefer the dignified look of my '00 model. It doesn't have the cheesy chrome of later ones. Being a selectable 4X4 it's my winter driver for foul weather. One reason I traded my 5...

    Daylight Running Lights

My headlights sort of work automatically on my early 2000 Escalade. Sometimes at night they come on but sometimes not. When they work automatically, I can't turn my headlights to park only. I sometimes go onto a military base and make CERTAIN to turn my headlights off and only have my park lamps...

    New blazer vs Chevy Tahoe

Thursday morning, it was 1 degree. Friday, freezing rain on cold ground and slicker than snot. Sunday, nearly 70's degrees and I'm driving with the windows down looking for a newer vehicle. As I was leaving the Chevy dealer, I saw what looked like an odd Equinox. Then I noticed the "BLAZER" on...

    The Case for the Tech-2

I'll stick with my old stand by tools. Some I've had for decades. A huge vacuum gauge, volt/ohm meter and a 24 inch wooden dowel rod. I've got a couple of OBD II readers and they are handy but I tend to swap vehicles a lot and dedicated tools just collect dust. Over the years, I've had somewhere...
