To prevent (hopefully) future problems with the lifters, etc.
Some find it unnecessary. (I'm in this camp).
Some just plain don't like it.
That adds a little clarity, then. The new console has the switch but you would need to add the actual cooler part too. I, incorrectly, assumed that it cooled the cans in the cup holders.
Cold weather where you're at?
I would try getting that thing to open and when you finally do, shoot some silicone spray on the mechanism.
It's just a pop-open type plunger, there is no motor to close it (nor open) like on the big hatch.
Which makes sense if it felt the parking brake was on, it being that the transmission was doing the slowing down. I can feel mine kick in but, yes, hard to duplicate (just like the hill start assist).
