My reply doesn't match all of your conditions but my experience is that the top auto button makes the 4wd engage temporarily if tire(s) lose traction. I tried using that setting to pull up a small stump with a tow strap and the vehicle was bucking like you said. In full time 4wd it pulls steadily. Maybe this will help sort it out your issue.
