$139.99 navigation map update for my 2017 Yukon?

Just got an email offer for a map update offer for $139.99 ($20 off!). So dumb and ridiculous. The map doesn't continually auto update on an SUV this expensive with built-in 4G? And for something I'd consider a safety feature? And it's for the insanely crappy built-in navigation?

Thank God for Carplay which is 10000x better. I wish it would actually default into Carplay so I never had to see the terrible factory UI.

Nope, it's a profit center. If you can afford a truck this expensive, you can afford a map update. Then there are those who buy a Denali and fill it up with 87 from El Cheapo and rage at GM for the terrible mileage and engine problems that they created by being penny wise and pound foolish.

A truck this expensive should have way better software and a map that uses Google Maps or Open Street map and always have the latest data. GM writes software like its 1998.

I rented a new Chrysler Pacifica last year and the navigation systems are little different as they seem to follow an industry standard. Discussing this with relative, they said their Kia's nav system is like the Pacifica's.

These automakers probably don't want to pay Google's fees so they use someone else's software and obviously did it jointly to keep costs down. I'm no fan of having to buy updated discs (as of 2016 there are no more discs for mine) and would like for my wife to be able to set up the destinations and such while we're underway but understand the reasons for the restrictions with all these knuckleheads on the road.

I looked up CarPlay and see that it is an Apple product. That's something I would never use as I would never spend that much for a phone and do not like Apple's control over their products once sold to the consumer. Relatives have them and it seems to me that they don't really own their phones nor some of the content on them. Well, that's another topic.

I've seen a bunch of posts where people get the K2 trucks to have their phones show up on the screens and run Waze and other apps like you mentioned though.

They are all probably made by a third party oem manufacturer. Google maps licensing would be trivial, like a few cents per car per year.

Tesla absolutely blows everyone out of the water with their software and frequent updates to improve it, hope everyone else can catch up.

With everyone running around with these stupid phones I doubt it. There was a time when the rear seat DVDs were optional, then standard, then optional again as kids nowadays all have their own little selfie machines to ruin themselves with. Some of those new navigation systems are not part of the car but part of the Onstar subscription which to me seems like its going the way of the rear seat DVDs.

When I was a kid we would count license plates and fight! Kept us busy for hours! I remember our first experience with the rear DVD player. We rented a 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6 in Newark and picked up all of our nieces and nephews and threw them all in the back along with our kids to run some errands. Someone had a Shrek movie or something so my wife got it running and moved the sound to the rear so we didn't have to hear it and the rental didn't have 7 pairs of headsets. Soon the subject of dinner came up so we asked the kids if they wanted to go to Chuck-E-Cheese, SILENCE! Not a peep from the back with all those rugrats back there. We asked again, nothing. Turned the movie off to get their attention and go to dinner. Anyway, it was funny and memorable. I bought one the next year!

I bought the 2018 nav update for my 2015 and found the info to be almost 2 years old - do NOT waste your $$

I yanked that crap out of mine and put in a pioneer NEX, connects to Apple or Android, next year's model will be wireless connection

We have the Ford Nav in one of our Fusions. They want $149to update it. We use our phones — much cheaper!!
