Alright so I live in Nevada and as everyone knows it gets pretty hot here. When I had my 2006 silverado I swapped out for a 180 thermostat due to issues with engine heat shutting down my alternator. I noticed a little better performance and better oil life. I've only noticed 160's for the newer trucks I have 2010 Tahoe now and have been thinking about doing the thermostat switch. Anybody swapped theirs other than forced induction peeps. Anyone have any info on why I should or shouldn't do it?

I haven't done it so I can only offer an opinion. GM knows at what temperature these engines run best. Are you having issues with your 2010 running too hot? Even if you are, I'm not sure changing it out would do much. The stock thermostat would be wide open if the engine is running hot. The lower temperature one would just open sooner so I think the coolant flow would be the same with both wide open. It will also run a little too cool when the weather is not hot in my opinion.

Lower tstats are not recommended. Thesee engines need to run at higher temps to burn off condensation in the engine oil.

It made a huge difference in my 2006 my alternator would get to hot and shut down, I was just curious if I should preemptively switch it

I run a 160 in my 08 5.3 on 12 pounds of boost. Keeps it a bit cooler.

We find that these engines (on the dyno) make more power at higher temps than they do at lower temps.
