I love the AWD. When I really need to have 4wd instead of AWD I wouldn't want to be in an SUV, let alone a stock height one. Unless you slide off the road and get stuck, AWD will work fine. if you're driving in deep snow, I'd want something lifted, and with a bed to put weight in. There's a reason I plow in a regular cab w/t with a four inch lift and not in my denali, and it's much more than just the AWD. Believe me, I'd prefer the space and the heated leather, but I can put 2000lbs in the bed and I don't get hung up anywhere near as often.

But just driving around in slippery conditions the AWD is fine, just anticipate when it's going to kick in.

thanks for that- i guess this is the wrinkle that is adding to my confusion (seeing some models with switches, others without). ideally, I'm looking for an 03-06 so that settles it, not Denali for me because i have to have the hi/lo option. thanks!
You could always go with an AWD Tahoe, mine has a hi/lo.

Which system tends to work better, the mechanical system in the 01 and 02 or electric system in 03 to 06?

I'm heavily bias, but the 01-02 NVG-149. No electronics controlling it, infinite torque ratios between each individual wheel, proven 800hp+ capable. I've tried to loose traction, but I cant.

Afaik there was no AWD tahoe. Some of the newer vehicles have "auto 4wd" with a computer system that will engage it and disengage it, kinda like awd, but they also can be locked into lo/hi as well.

Stabilitrack is just the traction control system.
It applies the brakes to wheels individually to help regain steering during a skid

Is that what's in our 02 Denalis? I've heard that the transfer case or front differential in the Denalis won't hold up to huge horsepower, but is that for the 03-up? I'd like to do a blower someday but worried about blowing something up.

Our t-cases are very stout. Rated well over 1000hp. I don't know about the 03+ but I cant imagine them being a lot weaker then ours.

The front diff won't be a ticking time bomb and blow up after just one launch with big power, but the more power you push through it the shorter the lifespan will be. The kicker is that there's nothing we can do to upgrade, except cryogenically treating the housing and the rebuild kit, but nobody has documented doing it and if it makes a difference.

You shouldn't have a problem if you went with a supercharger unless you're going for glory and trying to get big numbers. The Silverado ss forum is super helpful as far as performance goes for our 01-02 Denali's as the use a 6.0l, 4l65e, nvg-149 and the same ifs

*edit: I just checked and the nvg-149 is "officially" rated at 2203ft-lb torque in a 6800lb vehicle."
