Thats a tuff call. Getting the heads decked, valves resealed, etc, new valves, springs, retainers, etc, can be expensive.

New heads, pull em out of the box, and set them on, and your off and running. And with new heads, you could get them customized for little extra money, honed, decked, etc.

At the end of the day, for me, it comes down to dollars and cents.

New heads can be had for refurbished - 300ish
New OEM style heads can be had for - 1000-1500
New performer style heads can be had for - 1000 to how much money you got?

With a stock lower end, unless you are going to drop in some new bearing, hone the liners, etc, I would stick to OEM or Refurb, or rebuild what you got.
I can get the new heads for 307 each. To rebuild and redo my originals, I'm hitting about 572 for it all. 42 more dollars and I got new heads

Case solved. New heads, but as was stated, I would hold off doing performance heads on a stock/old lower end.

Yeah I agree 100% I dont really care for the performance part with this one. It has more than enough power to get wife and kids around

PNW VietVet I appreciate your help with this one....

Thanks, but remember, @TollKeeper remembered what my 68 year old brain did not think to say at the time, is the part about no performance heads on a stock old lower end.
I had a 1996 Tahoe that was a 2 door and I loved that thing and wish I still had it. I am really looking forward to following this thread. Might want to reach out to a mod to transfer to a Build Thread in the Under Construction section. You can go for days in that section just looking at all the pics from the rigs there.

This rig of yours is one that has been talked about several times here at the forum. We find them and post pics when we can. I wish you were closer so I could see yours. I would do as you said too, never get rid of it, EVER!

PNW VietVet.... So I came across some bad news, and got some good news today. I decided to take a closer look at my block since it was stripped. There was a crack between cylinders 4 and 6. (Pics included) so... I ordered a brand new crate long block for her. As i said Never getting rid of it!0527211008~2.jpg0527211008.jpg

Ok, well, you kind of wanted to go that way anyway and now you have a great excuse for the wife for why you HAD to order an engine.

Where did you order the engine from? What warranty with it? Stock block or some upgrades?

When you look back at your original heads and block pics, looks like the #4 and #6 cylinder piston tops are the cleanest ones.

Have you already made your list of what else will be done since you took it all apart? Hoses, belts, water pump....etc.

Gonna stick with conventional oil, if that is what you ran or are you running full synthetic?

As big as that likely got when hot, I am amazed that you didn't have two really bad cylinders misfire.
