Is yours a 4WD? Does it do this regardless of whether the AC system is on or off? Do you have any clunky feedback in the vehicle when it makes this noise, or only an audible noise?
Mine is 2WD, and I had a weird noise a couple years back that was related to AC compressor. I noticed the noise and a clunky jolt when accelerating, mostly from a stop, but would also occur less frequently when accel after already moving, like when passing a car on the hwy. After I while, it snapped the AC belt. I replaced it, and it did it again after only a week or two.
After changing the belt and the tensioner, thinking the tensioner was going bad, I read about the original AC compressor design being such that over time, an excess of refrigerant oil will accumulate at the compressor input and the reed valve design would allow it to enter, and guess what happens when you try to compress a liquid?
I replaced the compressor and some other components, and haven't had the issue since.
Just something to check...
