Thanks

Hello Everyone;

Thank for all the feedback on changing the transmission fluid change. I did a lot more research and the gradual fluid change seems to be the best way to go. I plan on draining the pan and adding 4-5 quarts every other oil change for the next year or so.

A full flush is right around 12 quarts and a decent fluid will cost about $10/qt. The filter and gasket runs around $25 and if you want to replace the pan/plug, add another $43. That gets you pretty close to $200 for the complete service package. Since a brand new, rebuilt, 4L60E transmission (with fluid) is only $600 -- you are spending 1/3rd the price of the unit to simply maintain it. This service may make sense when you are talking about a more expensive transmission, but I just don't see the value of spending the money to service what would be better to just replace, whenever that time may come (since it hasn't happened yet in 140K miles), consider the rebuilt unit has many upgrades. To those who believe something magical happened to their transmission when they flushed the fluid, 9/10 times this doesn't happen.
Does this number include labor?

Everytime I've had a friend try and change fluid on a 150k+ mile trans, it ended up slipping like crazy right after.

I've always understood that if the fluid was never changed, the clutch pack material wears off the clutch packs but remains in the fluid which still allows them to grip. Once you drain the fluid, you lose all the clutch pack material and they start to slip.

If you still feel like you need to change the fluid, I would HIGHLY recommend putting in 1 or 2 quarts of Lucas Trans Fix. That stuff is AMAZING. I've used it in several slipping transmissions. I've still got one car that was slipping so bad, I could only get to 20 mph, put in two quarts of Lucas and its still driving great with no slippage 50k miles later.
