My 2008 GMC Yukon Denali has once again failed in the same manner as it did the first weekend of March, though this time, the incident could have resulted in a serious if not fatal incident had the conditions been worse.
For the second time, our Yukon has shut down while driving and is unable to restart. This time however, it occurred at highway speeds at night while returning from a hockey tournament with a vehicle full of hockey players and parents. While letting off the accelerator pedal in preparation to slow down and turn onto another highway, the engine shut down resulting in no power steering, power brakes etc. The vehicle was able to be negotiated to the side of the road, luckily safely. Again, the truck was able to be turned over normally, attempting to restart, but would not catch, the same as had occurred 5 weeks ago.
The previous diagnosis and repair by the GM dealer indicated a battery failure in March for the same symptoms we experienced this past Friday. Given the same symptoms, a nearby friend was called and came with a ¾ ton` diesel pickup to attempt a boost, along with a voltage tester. The battery tested at 12.7v, and even with booster cables connected turned over as it had before, but would not fire up. The truck turned over just fine with or without the boost, but would not start.
As a result the truck was towed again.
My concern is that previous occurrence / diagnosis has missed something, and that the same has occurred once again. The previous failure in early March occurred at slow speeds in a parking lot, this time it was at highway speed, which is of great concern to us for safety reasons. Had this failure occurred on a busier highway (we’re in southern Ontario often) or towing our travel trailer, the results could have been disastrous.
I have found several instances of this very same issue online with an assortment of suggested fixes, which in many cases did not remedy the situation resulting in the owner selling the vehicle in frustration. I trust that I will not find myself in this same situation.
I'm looking for feedback from anyone else on this issue board as I'm concerned the dealer will again miss the problem.
