Well to be fair, the problem here is that the tips are part of the bumper and not the exhaust, like they are on all the Mercs, Biiiiiiiiiimurz, Acuras, etc.. The travel of the bumper and exhaust is always somehow separate for obvious reasons. Once GM decided to attach the tips to the bumper this is the only way they could do it. The question is, why would they do that?
