I'll break the string of agreement and say 240K miles and 15 years old sounds like a lot just waiting to become problematic and need replacing. New rims, tires, headliner, springs, shocks, etc for fun (which isn't cheap)...then all kinds of shit starts to go south that has to be fixed? Money pit land. Just my 2 pennies.
yeah surprised this wasn't mention. I'm sure OP could find a low mileage 6.0 with 4L80e pullout from an HD, or fresh builds if this budget allowsDont forget to add built trans to the list.
You'll need the gmt900 caliper mounting bracket, along with the calipers and rotors. Thanks guys for all the input, I've been reading as much as I can in the last day or say, it's seems like a 6.0 swap is going to be a solid option. Ideally I think I'd like to find a decent low mileage 6.0 with 4L80e trans.
I figure rebuild it with some upgraded parts I should be able to come up with a nice little build to have some fun with. It would be awesome to stay in the 4k-5k range for both the motor and trans but we will see. This is also accounting for doing most of the work myself and soliciting some help from my father-in-laws brother who builds hot rods, I've learned a lot from him already so I think it would be well worth it to have the chance to learn a complete swap and build.
I like the idea of doing the GMT900 brake upgrade, does anyone know what bracket I would need. I think someone mentioned only needing a bracket if I remember correctly that I would need a bracket for the calibers.
Also while I'm thinking of it. What size rim might be best to have a happy medium of filing the wheel well and performance. I was thinking of going with the McGaughys 3 in. Front, 5 in. Rear kit with the Belltech Street Performance Shocks.
Thanks again and I'm sure I'll have more questions.
drive it as is=Considering building my Tahoe with 240k miles.
Physically, she needs a solid detail and a head liner. Mechanically she sounds solid, minus a questionable battery. Suspension is starting to become a little squishy. Needs front brakes.
Water pump, belt, thermostat, rear brakes done within last 5k miles.
So here’s my thought process.
Detail the crap out of it.
Fix the headliner.
Lower it and fix squishiness.
Rims and Tires.
Then stock pile cash and when the motor goes order a LS3 or find something wrecked with a nice performance power plant, and add on some fun stuff. Or rebuild current motor.
Not looking to go full race/show truck but a solid sleeper.
Rough estimates with a new crate LS3 and other stuff is in the $15-20 range. So I guess I need to see if I can find something comparable in that price range or move forward with the build.
What are your thoughts?
You go lots of life left in it. Mine just rolled 270k and runs great. Just keep the oil changed. Every 3k heremine just flipped over 240K. I am going to see how far it will go. had 210K on it when I bought it. still runs perfect so why mess with it?
