285 or 265

So very close to ordering tires. Not gonna say which ones I picked yet. But I want to know if with 3.73 gears, is it okay to get 285/75/16's? Or should I stay with a 265? I know there is little difference size wise compared to something much bigger like 33's but...Will it affect my tranny, power, or what else? I know they will fit, I am strictly asking if it will, slow my roll, so to speak? Are the gears working harder to turn the bigger tires?

Yes they work harder but you may not really notice it. You are looking at 1.1 increases of overall diameter, 0.55 radius increase. Not a whole lot.

So go for it? I am looking for a leaner taller tire. I had the 10 ply silent armors last winter and man those were fat. Felt like they made my truck work harder just normal driving.

these will be wider overall by .8 and width by 0.6 in. Use the calculatorbelow to figure you speedo difference. The 265 will be 5 pounds lighter then the goodyear you had if if the new one is a dueler Revo 2. If you are worried about it stick with the 265 and save some weight. I am sure they will do you just fine. with out much speedo error too.

i have 3.42 gears and am going to go up from 245 to 265. with what i have i wont go to 285 but you shouldn't have any issues with 3.73's.

it would just depend on personal preference. are 10 ply E rated. I am going with a D rated tire because i don't need E.

Thats what happened to me when Mavis installed Load range E "LT's" instead of the "P's" that I wanted. Truck felt heavy, slow and gas mileage suffered probably 3mpg! If your not towing or loading your truck up no reason for LT's on these OBS's. JMHO

I just did that exact upgrade in tire size!!

IMO, not much impact on handling, this truck is already slow...but b/c I went with Extreme AT's, they are a little noisy. The engine/tranny is handling it with easy, but you should definitely beef up your shocks (Bilstein HD's or equiv) and look into upgrading your sway bars, or at the very least, changing from rubber sway/end link bushings to polyurethane. Upgrading sway bar components will reduce body roll, which you will experience more of the higher you go....and it's really cheap if you do the minimum and just change out the bushings.

For 285's, you will also need to crank the front up 1.5"...I'm running 5" backspacing and did not need to trim after the crank.

As a reminder w/285's and the crank, it will take longer to stop...there are quite a few ways to upgrade braking on these rigs from mild ($$) to wild ($$$$). But a cheap investment is upgrade performance pads (i.e. Hawk LTS or Superduty pad)
