Got out and had some fun this weekend blazing across the desert and doing some hill climbing.. Camping shooting machine guns and watching shooting stars to.. Notice the rear bumper is no longer black at all.18767604.jpg 18740635.jpg

How are things so far...

Well over all I love it... But,

The gear ratio needs to be changed the stock gearing is very sluggish and the transmission shifts way to much at highway speeds. You would almost think the brakes are on but of course they are not.

Gas millage has gone from 18.5 mpg down to 12.6 mpg
Average on my weekly commute 90/10 highway/city driving.

The handling on the street is almost the same still corners very well for a big SUV. You do have to get used to the height and watching out for little cars that seem to vanish in the blind spots a little more often. Hitting a curb or something low to the ground on the side takes a little more attention. Going down a steep drive is a little more fun because you tend to not be able to see where you are going... lol

Braking has suffered a little you have to use a little more effort than before to slow those big tires down. The intermittent brake pulse I had seems to be more noticeable and not so intermittent now. I am planning to put some aftermarket rotors, calipers and better brake pads on. Anyone have some braking suggestions?

Taking it to the car wash is more interesting now they need to use a step ladder to wipe down the top and even the hood is to high for most of them.

Installing the steel bumpers creates a lot of wheel clearance but there was some trimming needed to clean things up so the tires wont rub. The extra weight added to my decrease in mpg too but the need for a solid winch mount and tow points helps out off road and I think people are a little less likely to get in my way now since it does look a lot meaner than before.

What's next?

My wife wants a power step installed...

I want to swap out the gearing.

I think getting a custom tune and correcting the speedo error will be a good thing..

Installing a swing out rear tire rack on the bumper will let me put a new tire and wheel on so I will have a spare again.

Then I will need a oversize jack...

I am installing a air pump also for tire pressure changes from off road to street.

This little adventure seems to be snow balling a little bit... But I am having fun.

Great looking build. What was the total cost of build including install? Are you going to buy or fab a swingout so you can get the tire out from under the frame? Maybe some extra gas on the back?

Total so far is $15,000 parts and labor I am planning to buy a swing out tire rack and install it into the Fabfour bumper and I am thinking of installing a spare tire fuel tank.

I am getting 4.88 gears installed next week to get more grunt out of the motor and help improve MPG.

Tiki, I guess you are just trying to be mean... Not $350 an hour but, there was a lot of labor involved... My tires are far from just street tires out here they work great in the desert and do very well in the snow and still get good road performance.. A lot of big heavy lugged tires do not work as well out here.

Installing the 4 inch lift kit, new wheels, new tires, shocks and mounts trimming the inner fender, grill had to be cut out and shaped, running wiring for lights making light bar mounts, Alignment, installing Stainless steel brake lines, installing the front and rear steel bumpers, Reinstalling sensors, installing and wiring a winch, changing coolant and other maint. related stuff. The parts cost adds up pretty quick too... Total parts were over 10 grand.

Would love to know your gas mileage after the gear change.
I will let you know in a week or so after I run a tank through it. It certainly has a lot more punch now. I think for the amount of highway miles I drive maybe we should have gone with 4.11 or 4.56 gears instead.. Off road it does much better and around town it seems a little better.. Over all.. I wont know until I run a tank or two through it.
