Hello, I have a 2004 Tahoe with the 5.3 vortec and the trans isnt bad necessarily but was more wondering about a spare one. I also have a 03 monte carlo ss with a 4l60E but the car itself is junk and was wondering if i could pull that trans out and in the future put it in the tahoe? Thanks!

The '03 Monte Carlo SS cannot possibly have a 4L60E in it because it's not RWD, it's FWD.
Monte Carlos use the 4T60E. It wouldn't live long in a heavier vehicle,
even if you somehow wanted a front wheel drive Tahoe.

You've a lot more research to do.

Every forum ive seen say it has a 4L60E.
Hate to bring bad news, but either those forums need spellchecking, or they can't tell an L from a T, or worse ...
Or is it that those forums not aware that the Monte Carlo has been FWD since 1995?
Look again. Oh, wait, my bad, said 4T60E - meant 4T65E.
Those front wheel drive transmissions will mate up to an LS4 long before any other GM LS small block.

Besides, you didn't even bother to mention whether your Tahoe is RWD or 4WD; that difference also matters.

2003 Monte Carlo SS should have a 3.8 V6 either Supercharged or not but no LS4 yet...

Longitudinal mounted/RWD vs transversely mounted/FWD.

Completely different transmissions.

Find yourself any full sized, GMT800-based truck. There's literally millions out there. Any Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon/XL or Silverado/Sierra 4L60e will work, 99-07 NBS. V6 or V8, doesn't matter became the transmissions were all the same. Just stick with 2wd or 4x4, whichever your Tahoe is.

You're right of course, but my point is the 4T60E family has nothing to do with the 4L60E family (except that they're 4 speeds), so he should ignore front wheel drive entirely.

strutaeng summed it all up with a bow for you. Don't waste your time with anything else.

Will potentially disagree there. I THINK the 4.3 transmissions retained the older depth bellhousings and input shaft. If so they will not work with the gen 3 blocks. @NickTransmissions

No. My NBS 99 4.3 had the same 300 mm input shaft and the 12 o'clock LS bellhousing bolt (empty, of course.)

I've mentioned this before, and I believe I've gotten the response that leads me to believe GM dealt away with making 4L60e units different in the V6 vs V8 Silverados GMT800s.

The transmission bench
The 4.3L applications began receiving the two-piece case design in 1996, ahead of the V8 transmissions which began seeing them in 1997 (LS1 equipped Vettes), and 1998 (LS1-equipped F-bodies) as well as 1998 MY trucks/SUVs (298mm for Gen1 SBC engine applications) until 1999 when GM began introducing the Gen3 small block V8s into the trucks, SUVs, etc.

The 4.3Ls began to switch over to the Gen3 engine architecture sometime in the early 2000s and received the same 4L60E 300mm designed input shafts, corresponding pump stators, TMBX/TLBX and like-kind family of torque converters at that time.
