4x4 in neutral

2003 Tahoe Z71. I bought used about 3 weeks ago. This has happened about five times now. While driving, the 4x4 light on the push button panel will be on the red neutral. It does still drive, although sluggish a bit. I have to pull over, and go through the process of getting the transfer case out of neutral. (Car off, emergency brake on, key in run position, trany in neutral, push 2Hi button, trany back to park, start truck). Any ideas?

My 2003 did the same thing randomly about a year ago, and I just replaced the 4wd selector switch. Hasn't happened any more.

I also wondered if it was in the switch. I'll replace it first. Thanks for this comment. Exactly what I wanted.

The next step if the switch does not fix it is to replace the encoder/motor on the transfer case.

I replaced the selector switch last Sunday so it's been exactly one week. It has not done it again. It was doing it about once every day. So I'm hoping the problems solved.
