I mean in order to get to the backside where the illumination bulbs are soldered.

I suppose the "correct" way is to do it that way, I was able to break the glass of the old bulb and with a small soldering tip heat it up enough to pull the strands out and I just re soldered it on the front if the board instead.
I didn't want to risk desoldering all of those 8 pins and end up breaking something

Well I resoldered mine to no avail. Yesterday, I went to radioshack and the only 12V incandescent they had was not bright at all. I desoldened the 8 pin connector, as well as the three pin, took the board off and replaced the one light. One of the factory lights worked and is MUCH brighter than the replacement. So now I am looking at doing something else. I believe I can get a standard white 5mm LED in there and figure up a way to include a resistor to keep from burning out the LED. I have found some LEDs that have an integral resistor for use with 12V but they are all red. Radioshack also has some 14.4V 200 and 240mA incandescents I may take a look at to see if I can get them to work.

Well I ended up getting two blue rectangular high intensity LEDs from radioshack. I took the board back apart, and put them in. I soldered a 470 ohm resistor to the cathode, bent it up and back down to save room and get the led as flush as possible. Used some insulation stripped off of a wire to insulate it and soldered it back in. Popped it back into the switch housing and went thorought all the functions to make sure it wasn't in the way. Works flawlessly and looks really good. I will attempt to post a picture when it gets dark enough.

Finally got it to post. It's not too bright at night, and the bad look on the auto 4x4 switch is bc the housing has a crack in it from being pushed too hard apparently. I think I am going to replace them with white LEDs at some point.

And bimmer, I believe you were correct on the resoldering. The first time I did it I neglected the three prong connector. Ever since I have disassembled and rebuilt it, my indicator light I staying on permanently for whatever mode I'm in.

Glad to hear, it just sucks to have you spend the money on a switch just because a stupid solder joint went bad
