I just got a 2012 Denali and I'm loving it so far. The newer 6.2 motors with AFM have MUCH quieter exhaust than the earlier ones and I'm looking to change this.

I've been reading through all of the exhaust threads. Seems Magnaflow weld in and Corsa are the most popular options. I've had Magnaflow and Corsa on my last 2 vehicles. I was happy with both but I'm looking to try Borla - or something a bit different.

The Goal: I'm basically looking for a low deep rumble that isn't too loud, doesn't drone, and doesn't have terrible AFM noise. This is my daily commuter and family vehicle so I want to keep it reasonable.

I have 3 ideas and am looking for some feedback:

Option 1: I'm looking at a Borla weld in for now. The stock 3.5" pipe limits the choices pretty quickly though. The only ones they have are XR1 mufflers (sportsman and multicore). Any experience with getting a Borla weld in on the 6.2 and not having annoying AFM noise and/or drone?

Option 2: Cut out the rear muffler/resonator and remove the 3rd cat. I know the factory muffler will prevent any drone and AFM noises but I'm not sure if this will be loud enough.

Option 2A: If Option 2 isn't loud enough the next step would be to add high flow cats and or Long Tube headers. Anybody tried this with the stock muffler on a 6.2 with AFM?

Step 1: remove your rear resonator. See how that sounds. Most people do this and it's perfect.

If you want more, that's when I'd see about doing option 1 or 2.

You can remove your resonator in your driveway with a hacksaw if you don't want to pay someone $20 to do it professionally. You don't even need to add tips till you know that's what you want.

Thanks. This is how I'm thinking I'll start.

Magna flow 12909.

Can you tell me how that muffler sounds with AFM active? I really want a system that you don't hear AFM activate.

On my '09 when I removed the rear resonator the drone inside was horrible, especially when towing my trailer where pulling at 70 in 5th gear put the engine in a rev range that was the worst for the drone. Put the resonator back on and left it there. Interestingly a friend with an '09 Denali XL did the same thing and there's absolutely no drone, but the longer length of the XL probably means the sound waves in the pipe are hitting in different places.

Can't speak to the XR1 on a Denali but a pair of them on my 911 race car are still pretty loud

How to shut up a 2008 Yukon Denali

Hello,

I'm new to Yukon. Have a 2008 Denali that I'm trying to shut up. Sounds like an old loud truck about to stall out. You can hear it idling a half a block away. I like the truck so I will put up with the 8.5 MPG but I don't want to put up with the noise. I'd like it to be as silent as possible.

Does the noise mean that the resonator has been removed? If so, how can I check? Do I need to get a better muffler? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks.

It's a great setup. There are videos on YouTube of the tone. No drone. But I don't have Afm on my Denali. With all the oil burning stuff I have read I don't want it either.

If you have a resonator you should see an extra little "muffler" right out back by the exit to the exhaust. It looks like a large cylindrical can with the exhaust pipe coming in one end and out the other.

If you want quieter exhaust you ought to look for a factory setup from one of the newer Denali's or Escalade's with AFM (2010+). Mine is VERY quiet. You hear a slight V8 rumble but it is pretty quiet.

I've heard the Denali/Escalade exhaust from the 07-09 model years and it is much louder (my friend had a 2007 Escalade). It honestly sounds closer to the sound I'm looking for.

In my experience I'd remove the third cat before you made any other moves.
