So my 96 Tahoe with 154k miles has been running fine and getting decent mileage (last week was 17.3 city/hwy combined), up until this morning. On my way to work she stalled at a stop light and took a few tries to start up, sounded ok and i continued on my way. Then again at a stop it stalled again and coughed and finally started up after a few tries. So i continue on my way, well i m moving along and i can feel her chug a little and backfire a few times and again stalls as im going up a slight hill. So im just going to bring it to my mechanic which is my girlfriends dad, so on the way to him. On the highway she starts slowing down and then dies. I m parked on the side of the highway and it wouldnt start at all. As i reach for my AAA card i try to start it again and finally it starts and rev it a little and the tach only goes to 4k, which is weird cause ive seen it go to 5500 where the red is, and i continue down the highway in 3rd gear figure the extra rpm's would keep me going. So i'm coming down the off ramp which is down hill, i had to two foot it to keep her from stalling again. I finally get her to the shop and park and i notice my idle is a little erratic, feels off somewhat??

I have already replaced, the wires, plugs, air filter, cap, rotor, all this summer.
I have waiting to go on a coil, synthetic oil + filter, fuel filter, steering stabilizer and a new set of barn doors with the new pins, old ones a rusting apart. So i am going to have the mechanic put these on while shes's down.

So after this long a** tale, what do you think the problem can be??
Is there a limp home mode on the 96?
And during this adventure this morning i did not have the check engine light come on???

Loose plug?? Loose plug wire ... would be lots of things.

Do you normally rev the engine to 4K just sitting in your driveway or on the side of the road??

Two things. Check for stored codes. And remove air cleaner ducting from throttle body open throttle and take a good whiff for a smell of gasoline. One more thing if you were misfiring your cel light should have blinked. If not make sure it comes for a few seconds at startup.

I think your spider assembly is dumping fuel into the plenum so have your mechanic take a good whiff in there. And if needed the new and improved one is $260 at Amazon. Don't get burned.

yeah i am thinking its fuel related cause of the backfire, plus its got that mileage for the injectors to go

Well as of right now he hasn't looked at it yet, so either tonight or tomorrow im going to take a look at it.

Oh and the spider assembly at amazon is down to $224.66

Im going to guess fuel pump.

It's possible, but usually when a fuel pump goes, it doesn't work again for a few minutes, and it doesn't cause misfires. You just lose power for a few seconds and then die. Definitely check to see if you hear it priming when you turn the key on.

Well i just heard from the mechanic and he has the truck on the lift and the fuel pump is going and the gas tank is rotting.

So i need to find a gas tank and from looking online they dont have any new ones? only used ones, so hopefully i can find a good one??
