My '99 5.7l Tahoe has run great until the other day...

I was about 20 miles from home, having been driving for about an hour an a half, when I hit a big puddle that I didn't see (it was dark and hadn't rained in a couple of hours--the road was dry) that was the result of a stopped up drain on a bridge I was crossing. Luckily I didn't hydroplane, since I hit the puddle on just the passenger side of the truck, but it did cause me to swerve left and back to the right, and slam on my brakes.

After hitting the puddle my speedometer went dead, the ABS light came on and stayed on, and the truck wouldn't shift...I pulled over, turned the truck off, disconnected the battery, waited a few minutes, and reconnected the battery hoping that it would reset or work itself out.

This didn't work and I had to creep the rest of the way home.

I noticed that the transmission wouldn't shift out of 1st gear in drive or when in 3. It will manually shift from 1 to 2 when I shift it from the column shifter, but will not shift above 2nd gear when I manually shift the column shifter over to 3.

I'm guessing that the puddle caused something to get wet, short out, or pull loose from somewhere...any ideas of where to look would be helpful.

Any update on this?

The wiring was pulled loose from the vehicle speed sensor by the impact of hitting the puddle. My my shop made the accurate diagnosis in about 15 seconds. In retrospect I can't believe that I nor anyone on the forum could provide this answer--it seems totally obvious.

Might have had something to do with the fact that you posted your question for a '99 model year truck in the 2007+ section. Completely different vehicles. ;)

You'll get more responses and a more accurate diagnosis if you post in the correct section. By the way, welcome to TYF.
